Hoag Indian letterbooks, 1870-1878.

Letterbooks (letterpress). Books contain copies of letters (also some bills, receipts, reports, etc.) originating from the office of the Central Superintendency written by Hoag, Cyrus Beede (chief clerk) and Edward F. Hoag (clerk and son of Hoag) and addressed to the U.S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs (Francis A. Walker 1871-1872, Edward P. Smith 1873-1875), to Indian Agents (including Brinton Darlington and Jonathan Richards) and to various merchants, shippers, government officials, etc. Includes letters related to Hoag's attempts to settle his financial accounts with Washington after his resignation. Much of the correspondence is of a routine nature and is concerned with day-to-day business of the Superintendency and its agencies, there are also letters dealing with problems and situations that arose during Hoag's tenure, such as the murder of the chief of the Wichitas by the Osage (1873) and the murder of four Osage by the militia (1874).

Jonathan Richards (principal of Haverford School, 1853-1857) served as an Indian agent for the Wichitas and affiliated bands at Wichita, Kansas from 1870-1876. Edward Parmelee Smith was ordained a pastor of the Congregational Church in 1856. From 1863-1866 he served as field agent and field secretary of the U.S. Christian Commission. Smith was district secretary from 1866-1871, and then general field agent for the American Missionary Association from 1871-1873. Enoch Hoag, a member of Iowa Yearly Meeting, was appointed Superintendent of the Central Superintendency (Kansas and Indian Territory) in 1869 under President Grant's "Peace Policy." This gave supervision of the Indians in this area to the Orthodox branch of the Society of Friends.
